"From Dawn to Dusk: My Journey Through Training and Mentorship at United Express / SkyWest"
In the heart of California's Central Coast, nestled in the serene city of San Luis Obispo, began my extraordinary journey with United Express / SkyWest. It was an adventure that took flight every morning at the crack of dawn, soaring over the landscapes of California, and landing at the bustling Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
Early Morning Takeoff
My day would begin at the ungodly hour of 3:00 AM. While most of the city was still in a deep slumber, I would be gearing up for the day ahead. By 5:00 AM, I was aboard the company aircraft, a Brasilia, taking off from San Luis Obispo (SBP) to LAX. The crisp morning air and the promise of a new day always brought a sense of excitement.
The Training Department in LAX
Upon arriving at LAX around 6:00 AM, I would make my way to the training facility. Initially, my role was that of an instructor in the Training Department. For a couple of years, I had the privilege of imparting knowledge and skills to new recruits, ensuring they were well-prepared for their roles.
The bustling atmosphere of the training department was invigorating. It was a place where knowledge was shared, and careers were shaped. The camaraderie among colleagues was palpable, and the sense of purpose was ever-present.
Transition to Technical Writer
As the company began transitioning from the old Apollo system to the new FastAir system, I embraced a new challenge. I took on the role of a technical writer for the training department. This involved meticulously crafting training materials and manuals that would facilitate the smooth adoption of the new system. It was a period of learning and growth, where attention to detail and clarity were paramount.
A Grueling yet Rewarding Routine
For 3.5 years, my routine was rigorous but immensely rewarding. I would catch the 5:00 AM flight to LAX, work tirelessly throughout the day, and then catch the 6:00 PM departure back to SBP. This cycle, though demanding, was filled with invaluable experiences and opportunities for personal and professional development.
Rising to Leadership
My dedication and hard work eventually led to a significant milestone in my career. I was appointed as the Manager of Customer Service Training, overseeing the training departments in both LAX and Seattle (SEA). This role allowed me to work closely with an incredible team of individuals, each contributing their unique strengths and insights.
Mentorship and Growth
One of the most profound aspects of this journey was the mentorship I received from my boss. They were not just a leader but a guide and mentor who played a pivotal role in my growth. The lessons learned and the wisdom imparted during this time have left an indelible mark on my career.
Reflections and Gratitude
Looking back, my days at United Express / SkyWest were filled with hard work, challenges, and a deep sense of fulfillment. The friendships forged, the skills acquired, and the experiences gained have been invaluable. Working for United / SkyWest was more than just a job; it was a chapter of my life that shaped who I am today.
As I reflect on this journey, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunities and experiences that came my way. The aviation industry, with its ever-evolving dynamics and challenges, taught me the value of perseverance, dedication, and continuous learning.
My time at United Express / SkyWest was a testament to the power of passion and hard work. It was a journey through the skies, both literal and metaphorical, that will always hold a special place in my heart. Here's to the memories and the many more adventures that lie ahead.
