As many of you know, I also run an aviation blog, and recently I wrote an article that I just had to share here on the Alaska Blog. It's something that affects all of us who plan on traveling by air, whether it's for a quick trip down south or exploring the vast beauty within our own incredible state.

Now, I know this might sound like just another bureaucratic hurdle, but trust me on this one. If you have any airline travel in your near future, or even if you think you might sometime down the line, getting your Real ID sorted out now can save you a major headache at the airport.

What is a Real ID, anyway?

For those who might not be familiar, the Real ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 to establish minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification ¹ cards. Starting on May 7, 2025, you will need a Real ID-compliant driver's license or another acceptable form of federal identification (like a passport or military ID) to board domestic flights in the United States.  

Living in Alaska often means air travel is a necessity, not just a luxury. Whether you're heading to visit family, attending a conference, or escaping for a bit of warmer weather, the ability to fly is crucial. Imagine arriving at the airport, excited for your trip, only to be turned away because your ID isn't up to the new federal standards. That's a travel nightmare no one wants to experience!

The deadline is fast approaching! While May 7, 2025, might seem like it's still a ways off, time has a way of flying by (pun intended!). Getting your Real ID now will give you peace of mind and ensure your future travel plans go smoothly.

How do you get a Real ID in Alaska?

The process is relatively straightforward. You'll need to visit your local Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office and bring certain documents to prove your identity, social security number, and Alaska residency. It's always a good idea to check the official Alaska DMV website beforehand to get the most up-to-date information on required documents and any potential appointment requirements.
