Strange Summer Skies: A Word to My Fellow Alaskans

"Rain, Fog, and Family: Why We Watch Each Other’s Backs"

Whenever we get a stretch of strange summer weather like we’re seeing now — rain, fog, winds, and low ceilings — it takes me right back to my last season flying for Pro-Mech. That summer was nothing but thick soup from start to finish. Not much fun when you’re in the air every day, and certainly not when you’re trying to keep things safe and on schedule.

Days like these remind me to say a prayer — for my fellow aviators navigating these challenging skies, and for our fishermen, many of whom are my blood — uncles, cousins, brothers. Every one of them out there working hard in conditions that demand sharp minds and steady hands.

So here’s my reminder to all of us: stay sharp, stay safe, and watch out for each other. This land and sea have given us much, but they demand respect. Let's be extra vigilant out there, my friends.

Keep your head on a swivel and your heart in the right place.
